THE Lusaka City Council yesterday buried 25 unclaimed bodies in cooperation with the Seventh Day Adventist Church( SDA) Ibex Hill Mission District at Chingwere Cemetry in Matero.
The Church provided coffins, disinfectant and conducted a church service for the unclaimed bodies.
LCC public relations officer Kabaenda Makwele said on June 29, this year, the city council issued a notice in the press about its intention to bury 25 bodies following a request from the University Teaching Hospital( UTH).
Makwele said the council buried the bodies in agreement with the provisions on section 61, paragraph 41 of the Second Shedule of Local Government Act Cap 281 which assigns a 14- day notice for members of the public to claim and identify any of the bodies and conduct burial.
“ LCC is humbled by the works of the SDA Church who always rise to the task of performing noble burials of unclaimed bodies and we hope other organizations will emulate the candid works of the church.
The Local Authority also wishes to thank UTH management for facilitating the release of the bodies, ” Makwele said.
