Police officer shot in the leg whilst trying to rob a house in Lilayi area, police say

A 26-year-old police officer has been shot in the leg while he and unknown people tried to rob a house in Lusaka’s Lilayi area.

Police have since established that the suspect, Joshua Banda is a deserter from the Zambia Police and has been on the police’s wanted list.

Zambia Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said police received a report of a shooting incident which happened between 03:00 and 03:30 hours on Friday from Zenso Siakajomoa aged 44 of House Number 436 Lilayi Housing Estates who reported that unknown criminals broke into his house.

“The victim reported that the criminals broke in through the Kitchen window and fortunately he was awake and managed to shoot at one of them in the left leg using a Point 22 Rifle whilst others managed to escape.The suspect has been identified as Joshua Banda aged 26 of unknown house number Lilayi. The Suspect was rushed to Chilenje level one hospital for treatment. The scene of crime was visited,” he said.

Mr. Hamoonga said police instituted investigations into the matter and it has been established that the suspect is a deserter from the Zambia Police Service who has been wanted by police.
