Frank Lampard said he was proud of keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s display during a 3-1 win at Brighton and Hove Albion on Monday but former Manchester United defender Gary Neville said he must get obviate the Spaniard if Chelsea are to contest the title.

Arrizabalaga became the world’s costliest goalkeeper when he joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao for €80 million in 2018 but has struggled to justify that massive fee.

He was guilty for Brighton’s equaliser on Monday, allowing Leandro Trossard’s shot from outside the world to evade him, although Reece James’s stunning goal 100 seconds later quickly took the main target off his error.

Neville, working as a pundit for Sky Sports, was rather more ruthless in his assessment of Arrizabalaga than Lampard and suggested the Chelsea manager should be too.

“You won’t win the league with a keeper who is letting goals in from outside his box, doesn’t dominate his area, concedes from set pieces, it’s not getting to happen,” Neville said.

According to a statistic employed by Sky Sports, Arrizabalaga’s error was the 19th time he has conceded from an attempt delivered from outside the penalty area since he arrived, quite the other keeper over that period.

Lampard was asked whether he was within the search for a replacement keeper before the deadline and his answer was few ringing endorsement. “Not at the instant , but it’s some weeks to travel until the top of the window. Very proud of Kepa. With the shot I’m unsure if he could have done better.

“If we usher in anyone, then it’s for competition. That’s the character of Chelsea.”

Neville suggested it had been a requirement . “A few years ago Liverpool were being prevented from being a championship winning side by not having a keeper who could take them there, it’s a very stark warning for Frank,” he said.

“He knows what he needs, he doesn’t just like the keeper, he wants him out and he wants a replacement one in. Frank knows he could get the sack if he doesn’t win the league in two or three years, he’s spent £200 million.

“Pep did it, Klopp did it, Alex Ferguson did it. Every manager worth his salt must be harsh, ruthless.” –

– Neymar (above) said he “acted sort of a fool” following his red card against Marseille but called on football officials to try to to more to combat discrimination after accusing Spanish defender Alvaro Gonzalez of racism.

The Brazil forward was one among five players sent off after a mass brawl at the top of PSG’s 1-0 loss in Ligue 1 on Sunday, and later claimed Gonzalez had called him a “monkey” during a series of furious tweets.

PSG have stood by the world’s costliest player, saying the club “strongly supports” him, but Neymar conceded he would accept his punishment which is predicted to be revealed by the French league’s disciplinary commission today.

“Yesterday I revolted. i used to be punished with red because I wanted to hit someone who offended me,” Neymar said during a lengthy Instagram post.

“I thought I couldn’t leave without doing something because I realised that those responsible wouldn’t do anything, didn’t notice or ignored the very fact .”

Neymar was dismissed for slapping Gonzalez on the rear of the top , with team-mates Layvin Kurzawa and Leandro Paredes also sent off, also as Marseille’s Dario Benedetto and Jordan Amavi.“In our sport, aggressions, insults, swearing are a part of the sport , of the dispute. You can’t be affectionate. I understand this guy partly, all is a component of the sport , but racism and intolerance are unacceptable,” Neymar continued.

“Should I even have ignored it? I don’t know yet. Today, with a cool head, I say yes, but in due course, my companions and that i asked the referees for help and that we were ignored.

“I accept my punishment because I should have followed the trail of unpolluted football. I hope, on the opposite hand, that the offender also will be punished.

“Racism exists. It exists, but we’ve to prevent it. No more. Enough!”

“The guy was a fool. I also acted sort of a fool for allowing myself to urge involved therein ,” he added.

PSG have lost their opening two games of the season for the primary time since 1984/85, and face another spell without Neymar whose first two seasons in France were marred by injuries.

They host Metz today in what was originally scheduled to be their Ligue 1 season opener.

Marseille issued a press release of their own defending Gonzalez. He denied racism and accused Neymar of being a nasty loser. – AFP
