Mayor Sampa Dissolves Marriage

LUSAKA Mayor Miles Sampa is now single following the Lusaka High Court’s decision to issue a certificate declaring absolute dissolution of his over 10-year marriage to Mwika Mwenechanya.

This follows the court’s decision to declare absolute a decree nisi it issued in 2018 to dissolve the union.

A decree nisi is an order by a court of law stating the date on which a marriage will end, unless a good reason not to grant divorce is advanced.

In 2018, Ms Mwenechanya filed for divorce after the couple had been on separation for over two years.

Ms Mwenechanya, who was lawfully married to Mr Sampa on April 14, 2007 at St Ignatius Church in Lusaka, said the union of 11 years had irretrievably broken down.

She urged the court to

grant her sole custody of their daughter and that Mr Sampa should be allowed reasonable access to the girl.

Ms Mwenechanya also asked the court to order

that she continues living in the matrimonial house and a further order of property settlement.

She also wanted the court to order the mayor to be paying K7,000 child maintenance, a plea which was granted.

Ms Mwenechanya prayed for the marriage to be dissolved because her husband had consented to a decree nisi.

On June 14, 2018, Lusaka High Court judge Nicola Sharpe-Phiri declared the union dissolved unless sufficient cause was shown to the court in six months on why the decree should not be made absolute.

The High Court, through the registrar’s office, has since issued a certificate making the decree nisi absolute.

‘It is, hereby, certified that the said decree on this July 28 , 2018 made final and absolute and that the said marriage

is, thereby, dissolved,” the certificate dated September 24,2020 reads.
