Soapie characters stuck with No Storylines
So many soapies, so many characters, so little storylines. But what happens when you have a main character that runs out of storylines for a really long time?
Writers get a writer’s block and struggle to write stories for characters all the time, sometimes they get a storyline idea for a character then pass it to another character because it just won’t fit the character, sometimes actors leave or get fired from the show and that affects the main character.
For example in Generations The Legacy, Bulelwa apparently had to be released from her contract because she wasn’t cutting it, Her onscreen partner Smanga was back to square one, in terms of starting a family, getting married etc.
Below are a few characters that have had no storylines for a while:
Sometimes it feels like the main character is really a prop. The Diale’s all have storylines most of the time, and they need to have a grandmother in their household because all households have grandmother’s right?
GogFlo owns a BNB and has shares at a coffee shop but like all grandmothers, nothing is happening in her life.
What was supposed to happen:
Ayanda got an idea to start a safe house for abused women in Alexandra and she didn’t have accommodation, so she’s renting the BNB from GogFlo.
It makes more sense for GogFlo to get the safe house idea because she already has a BNB, but she’s old and frail and has all sorta diseases. She can’t do a 9 to 5 at the coffee shop and run the safe house…
We already have another old woman; Tshidi’s mother, so why do we need two old, frail characters in the soapie?
Scandal: Quinton Nyathi
Quinton Nyathi’s character always seemed to be stronger when he was surrounded by other characters; Yvonne, Thembeka, Layla(his mother) etc. Now that Yvonne and Thembeka have left the show, I really didn’t see much of his character developing. He would’ve never gotten involved with his baby’s mother; Dintle because they never conceived their child out of love or dated.
Brighton Ngoma, who played the character of Quinton Nyathi just left the show…
7de Laan: Marko
The last time we saw Marko Greyling really have anything to say, was when Emma was still on the show. She left for Rustenburg and took Marko with her, and we are left with a ghost. The next time Marko’s character will really live again is when Esti leaves Rickus.
Until then, we are stuck with the fatherless, goalless coffee shop owner who’s eavesdropping on other people’s conversations and doing nothing with his life.
Are there any other main characters that you feel have hit a drought and have no character development?
