Eight family members die in house inferno in Nsama district, police say

A 49-year-old husband and father of seven children in Nsama district of Northern Province has lost his wife and their seven children in a house inferno.

Richard Musonda is believed to have gone out fishing for two days only to be called by neighbors yesterday that his grass thatched house had been engulfed by a fire and had claimed his entire household.

The victims are alleged to have retired to bed , taking with them a brazier which ended up burning them to death.

Zambia Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the incident occurred yesterday at around 22:00 hours in Katwatwa village of Nsama chiefdom.

“The matter was reported at Kaputa Police Station by Richard Musonda aged 49 who reported that Eight of his family members which includes his wife Edith Kalembwe aged 31 and his seven biological children ranging from two to 18 years namely Evans Katali, Joseph Manda, Jackson Matuta ,Richard Musonda, Maggie Chola, Janipher Mwape and Abigail Chansa died after a grass thatched shelter where they were sleeping in caught fire,” he said.

Mr. Hamoonga said that it is suspected that the victims retired to bed leaving a burning brazier besides them.
