ACTIONAID Zambia( AAZ) has congratulated the 30, 496 teachers who have successfully been recruited by the Ministry of Education through the Teaching Service Commission across the country.

In a statement, AAZ country director director Nalucha Ziba said the move represents a major stride to achieving the schoolteacher pupil ratio targets of 401 at primary academy position, and 421 in junior secondary school by 2022, according to their 2017- 2021 Education and Skills Sector Plan.
“ In the 2022 National Budget speech, the Minister of Finance announced and elaborated the teacher reclamation plan for the fiscal year, a move which was welcomed by numerous stakeholders. It’s worth noting, the Education sector has not had significant recruitment of teachers since 2012 which has compromised on the quality of service– delivery in the sector and contributed to high unemployment levelsparticularly among the youthalso, the introduction of free education policy in 2022 exacerbated challenges and revealed major hurdles in achieving SDG4 by 2030, ” she said.

Ms Ziba said the large influx of learners at all levels of education exposed inadequate infrastructure and the need for additional teachers to sustain quality education for all.
“ As an Organization that advocates for equality, we’ve noted the progressive gender milestone of 51 of the recruits being female and drawn more from rural areasstilllooking at trends in the past we can anticipate requests for transfer from these rural areas to urban areas which are generally politically motivated, ” Ms Ziba.

She called on the Ministry of Education and the Teaching Service Commission to adhere to the government policy on transfers to ensure that schools in rural areas maintain and ultimately increase staffing levels to address the difference between teacher pupil ratios in rural areas.
